Service Description

These Miyake Drop-In sessions will provide an opportunity to play Miyake together while honing in on form, stamina, and musicality in the style of RAW Taiko. Miyake is characterised by a unique repeating rhythm, played in a side lunge, arranged with a variety of musical and performative embellishments. Originating from folk festival drumming on the island of Miyake, this form of taiko was arranged for musical performance by Akio Tsumura, a Miyake Island local, and then shared with and popularized by world-renowned taiko group Kodo in the 1980s. It has since evolved into a style loved and practised widely by taiko groups around the world, including RAW Taiko. All levels are welcome. Some familiarity with the Miyake rhythm is recommended. Studio RAW will open at 6:30pm for anyone wanting to review the basics of Miyake rhythm or form prior to the drop-in start time at 7pm. Seasoned players are welcome to skip this instructional and arrive to play at 7pm. This drop-in is limited to 14 participants. Sign-up is required in order to secure a spot. Sign up opens 1 week prior to the start date of each drop-in. Cost: Sliding scale $15-25 + HST Bachi (drumsticks) will be provided.
