Miyake Fundamentals
Learn the fundamentals of Miyake in the style of RAW Taiko
Service Description
Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:00pm Sept 16 - Oct 21 (5 sessions - no class on October 7th) Lead Instructor: Wy-J (RAW Member) Miyake taiko has been a cornerstone in RAW Taiko’s performance repertoire for decades. Originating from folk festival drumming on the island of Miyake, this form of taiko was arranged for musical performance by Akio Tsumura, a Miyake Island local, and then shared with and popularized by world-renowned taiko group Kodo in the 1980s. It has since evolved into a style loved and practiced widely by taiko groups around the world. Miyake is characterized by a unique repeating rhythm, arranged with a variety of musical and performative embellishments. In this course, participants will learn the basics of Miyake: rhythm pattern, form, stance, and strike, in the style of RAW Taiko. Please note that Miyake is a physically demanding style of taiko drumming. While this course will offer instruction and options that cater to a range of bodies and needs, participants are encouraged to self-monitor throughout the workshop, take breaks as needed, and prepare accordingly to engage in stamina-based taiko. Previous taiko or movement experience is recommended, but not mandatory. Sliding Scale $175-$250 + HST
