Service Description

April 18 & 19, 6:30pm - 8:30pm Lead Instructor: Jihyun Back (Artist in Residence) RAW is excited to offer our first janggu workshop intensive with current Studio RAW Artist in Residence, Jihyun Back! The janggu, the most popular percussion instrument in Korea, is an hourglass-shaped drum with two heads that produces distinct sounds on each side. It is used in many styles of Korean music, including court music, shamanistic folk music, and Samul Nori. It can be played sitting down, or strapped on to the body and played while dancing. Day 1: Introduction Basic janggu technique Sitting technique Day 2: Warmup Strapping drum to body technique Standing technique with footwork All materials and instruments provided. This two day intensive is open to anyone 18+. No percussion or musical experience required. Sliding Scale $100-$150 + HST --- Studio RAW’s Artist In Residence Program aims to provide low/no cost access to studio and presentation space for East/Southeast Asian music and movement artists in Toronto. We prioritize percussion artists who often experience greater barriers to securing appropriate rehearsal space. Jianna (Jihyun) Back is a professional Korean traditional dancer and percussionist with over 20 years of experience. She trained with the renowned Little Angels Children’s Art Troupe and performed with the Uijeongbu Municipal Dance Company in Korea. Since moving to Toronto in 2020, she has promoted Korean culture through performances and education, performing in Waterloo, Toronto, and Montreal. Jihyun began her Residency with Studio RAW in Fall 2024. Join us as she activates the studio with the dynamic energy of Janggu this Spring!
