Service Description

Intro to Miyake Thursday July 2, 6:30-8:30PM (2hr workshop) Lead Instructor: Wy-J (RAW Member) Miyake taiko has been a cornerstone in RAW Taiko’s performance repertoire for decades. Originating from folk festival drumming on the island of Miyake, this form of taiko was arranged for musical performance by Akio Tsumura, a Miyake Island local, and then shared with and popularized by world-renowned taiko group Kodo in the 1980s. It has since evolved into a style loved and practiced widely by taiko groups around the world. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Miyake: rhythm pattern, form, stance, and strike, in the style of RAW Taiko. No prior taiko experience required. Note that Miyake is a physically demanding style. While this workshop will offer instructions that cater to a range of bodies and needs, participants are encouraged to self-monitor throughout the workshop, take breaks as needed, and prepare accordingly to engage in stamina-based taiko. Cost: Sliding Scale $25-$45 + HST
