Service Description

Miyake: 2-Day Workshop Intensive Miyake taiko has been a cornerstone in RAW Taiko’s performance repertoire for decades. Originating from folk festival drumming on the island of Miyake, this form of taiko was arranged for musical performance by Akio Tsumura, a Miyake Island local, and then shared with and popularized by world-renowned taiko group Kodo in the 1980s. It has since evolved into a style loved and practiced widely by taiko groups around the world. Miyake is characterized by a unique repeating rhythm, arranged with a variety of musical and performative embellishments. In this 2-day workshop intensive with instructor Wy Joung Kou (RAW Taiko Member), participants will learn the Miyake rhythm pattern, with a focus on form, stance, strike, and musicality in the style of RAW Taiko. Please note that Miyake is a physically demanding style of taiko drumming. While this workshop intensive will offer instruction and options that cater to a range of bodies and needs, participants are encouraged to self-monitor throughout the workshop, take breaks as needed, and prepare accordingly to engage in stamina-based taiko. Dates (participants must attend both sessions): Saturday April 6th from 6-8:30pm Sunday April 7th from 3-5:30pm Cost: Sliding Scale $200-$250 + HST Class Capacity: This class is limited to 16 participants (participation is open to all, including non-Asian folks and people of all genders). Bachi (drumsticks) will be provided for workshop use. You may also purchase your own pair on site. Experience Level: Intermediate - prior taiko experience is strongly encouraged
