Service Description

Coming up this Spring at Studio RAW: March Break Taiko Camp for girls, trans and gender non-conforming youth ages 10-13 in our RAW Taiko community! Join us for Taiko Camp, a 5-day taiko drumming program using movement, art, games and rhythm to explore what happens when we come together to build self-awareness, learn about diasporic East/South-East Asian histories and cultures, celebrate our differences, and foster our collective creative power. WHAT IS TAIKO CAMP? “Taiko” means drum in Japanese and at Studio RAW, we practice “kumi-daiko” which translates to “team drumming”. Drawing from North American lineages of kumi-daiko, we use taiko as a vehicle for community building, self-empowerment, and creative expression. Taiko Camp will focus on all of these things, with a curriculum spanning Taiko Foundations, Self & Body Awareness (including introductory martial arts exercises), and Individual & Collective Expression (including choral and visual arts activities). WHEN & WHERE IS TAIKO CAMP? Camp takes place from March 10-14, 2025, from 9AM - 3:30PM The majority of camp activities take place at Studio RAW (1220 Dupont St), with outdoor activities taking place (weather dependent) at nearby parks (to be confirmed in advance) Extended hours for early drop-off (8:30AM) and late pick-up (as late as 5PM) are available for an additional $15/day Camp will end with a share-back of learnings, open to caregivers and kin, on March 14th at 3pm HOW MUCH DOES TAIKO CAMP COST? We are grateful to be able to subsidize registration fees for all participants with support from the MLSE Foundation’s Community Action Grant! Camp registration is sliding scale $200 to $300 +HST per participant. Studio RAW will provide all participants with a t-shirt, their own pair of bachi (taiko drumsticks), and snacks. LUNCH IS NOT PROVIDED - all participants must bring a packed lunch. View a sample schedule for Taiko Camp in the gallery below or view the PDF here: www.bit.ly/48CrQu4
