Service Description
QTBIPOC ONLY [ If you are looking for our OPEN TO ALL Miyake workshop, copy/paste the following link into your browser: https://bit.ly/3MOclVR ] Miyake taiko has been a cornerstone in RAW Taiko’s performance repertoire for decades. Originating from folk festival drumming on the island of Miyake, this form of taiko was arranged for musical performance by Akio Tsumura, a Miyake Island local, and then shared with and popularized by world-renowned taiko group Kodo in the 1980s. It has since evolved into a style loved and practiced widely by taiko groups around the world. Miyake is characterized by a unique repeating rhythm, arranged with a variety of musical and performative embellishments. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Miyake: rhythm pattern, form, stance, and strike, in the style of RAW Taiko. Please note that Miyake is a physically demanding style of taiko drumming. While this workshop will offer instruction and options that cater to a range of bodies and needs, participants are encouraged to self-monitor throughout the workshop, take breaks as needed, and prepare accordingly to engage in stamina-based taiko. Cost: Sliding Scale $5-25 + HST Class Capacity: This class is limited to 14 participants. Participation is open to people who identify as Queer and/or Trans Black, Indigenous, or People of Colour community members. If you do not identify as QTBIPOC and would like to take this workshop, please sign up for our "Intro to Miyake: Open to All" workshop. Bachi (drumsticks) will be provided for workshop use. No prior taiko experience required!
